Cleaning thousands of metres of cultivation trays every day is a major challenge for an American producer specialising in large-scale cultivation of plant species, including lettuce. To simplify maintenance and optimise production, BOONS FIS, as a customisation specialist, developed a fully automated cleaning system.
The system is specially tailored to the unique needs of the large-scale cultivation line and ensures optimal hygiene, maximum efficiency and continuity.
A custom-designed washing installation around the transport system
Integration into an existing process without interruption
The cultivation trays, narrow channels approximately 20 cm wide and consisting of four sliding layers, form the backbone of the growing system.
The company already had a transport system that automatically slides the cultivation gutters apart into four layers. BOONS FIS developed a fully customised 2,8 meter long cultivation gutter washing machine, which integrates seamlessly into this existing line.
Inside the cabin, the gutters are cleaned 360° all around by strategically placed high-pressure nozzles.
- 40 bar for the main cleaning: removes both coarse and fine contamination.
- 20 bar for the rinsing: ensures a flawless end result.
The entire process proceeds continuously while the trays keep moving, so that the production flow continues uninterrupted.
Precision drying
Air knife tailored to the shape of the gutter
After rinsing, a drying phase follows with a custom-designed air knife. This fits perfectly to the specific shape of the growing trays, ensuring that every drop of water is efficiently removed. The result: dry, clean gutters that can be put back into production immediately.
To make the installation as user-friendly as possible, the machine is equipped with three secure access hatches for maintenance and manual inspection. The specially designed guides also ensure that the gutters always move perfectly centred through the machine without the risk of blockages or damage.
Compact skid with power and silence
Pumps, blower and sound insulation integrated
A technical skid was built next to the washing cabin, on which both the 40 and 20 bar pumps are mounted, together with a powerful blower for blowing off. A sound-insulating housing has been fitted around this blower, which significantly reduces the sound pressure. An important advantage in a busy production environment.
This compact setup ensures a maintenance-friendly and well-organised installation, fully prepared for continuous operation.
