What is an IFS certificate?

An IFS certificate is comparable to a BRC standard. It is a combination of HACCP, quality management and various organisation requirements. What is the difference between IFS and BRC and why would you opt for IFS? Read more information about the IFS in this article.

Difference between the IFS and BRC

When we talk about certificates in the food industry, both the IFS and the BRC come to the fore. But why are there two different certificates? What is the difference between these two standards?

We can compare the International Food Standard (IFS) with the BRC, but it is mainly seen as the German/French equivalent. BRC stands for British Retail Consortium. In 2003 this professional association of distributors set a specific standard for better food safety and the control of food products. The IFS is becoming increasingly popular in Europe. In both the Netherlands and Belgium the IFS certificate is becoming increasingly required. The difference between IFS and BRC:

  • With the IFS a points system is used and there are fewer differences in potential interpretation.
  • The IFS is the ultimate standard for German and French retail. The BRC is the ultimate standard for English retail. As a result, it may be the case that you have to be certified for both standards to demonstrate that you can comply with the specific requirements of the buyer in question.

As regards content there are few differences between the IFS and the BRC. Both certificates guarantee good food safety in the food industry.

Obtaining the IFS and BRC certificate

It is possible to obtain both certificates together. An independent party will arrive to carry out an audit. Both audits are however carried out separately. It is then possible to obtain both the IFS and the BRC certificate at the same time.

IFS audit? Guaranteed hygiene!

To be able to assure the personal hygiene of your personnel, you can for example invest in hygiene locks, hand disinfection systems and hand wash basins. This ensures a 'waterproof hygiene protocol' and guarantees an immaculate production environment. Such products are essential in the food industry to obtain your IFS certificate.
